Exclusive: Kevin Campbell backs Iwobi to shine on Everton return despite Nigeria troubles

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell is backing Alex Iwobi to get back to his best after a dramatic week for the Everton attacker while out on international duty.

Iwobi had multiple COVID tests while away as reports differed on what the outcomes of those tests were.

In the end, Iwobi played in Tuesday’s game against Lesotho as the Super Eagles picked up a 3-0 win and Campbell insists Iwobi has to get back down to business when he returns to Everton.

“Iwobi is one of those players who blows hot and cold,” Campbell exclusively told Goodison News.

“He has great ability. It’s up to him to get himself sorted out now and get back in there and back fit in one piece.

“Obviously he’s got a negative test but he needs consistency and to play regularly at Everton, that’s the key.”

It seems as though Iwobi is fine despite a report from OJBSport that claimed the winger had returned to Liverpool after a positive COVID test.

While Iwobi doesn’t get into our starting 11 when we have a full-strength side, he is still a valuable member of the squad and can really impress at times.

In that away win at Wolves this season he was unplayable as he picked up a well-earned goal.

Campbell is right though, there are too many poor performances mixed in with the good ones and that lack of consistency is hampering his development.

He has been played out of position at times this campaign but on the occasions that he’s been deployed in his preferred role, he has only impressed briefly.

Hopefully Iwobi can come back to Goodison and finish the season strongly to help us secure European football now all these COVID claims are behind him.

In other Everton news, we have reportedly been in contact with the agent of another Serie A star after we were linked with one of Juventus’ players.
