Everton loanee Yannick Bolasie hints at Boro stay
Yannick Bolasie’s Everton exit is inevitable and the Middlesbrough loanee is keeping his options open ahead of his summer free agency.
The 31-year-old’s unhappy five-year spell on Merseyside is set to come to an end in June with the expiry of his £75,000-a-week contract [spotrac].
He has not played for the Blues since the 2017/18 campaign after injury issues and a series of loan spells away from the club after he fell out of favour at the club.
He has been told in no uncertain terms by Carlo Ancelotti [Liverpool Echo] that his future resides elsewhere and in an exclusive interview with Hartlepool Mail he hinted at a possible extension to his stay at Middlesbrough with Neil Warnock.
“At the minute I’m just concentrating on what I’m doing, nothing as of yet for next season,” he said.
“I’m sure the gaffer will come and have a chat so you never know and we’ll see what happens but I’m sure the gaffer will come when he’s ready.”
Big Blues boost to the coffers
The biggest surprise is that the year is 2021 and Bolasie is still contracted as an Everton player.
The failure to shift him and other big-money earners out of the door has been one of the greatest criticisms of the Marcel Brands reign as director of football.
As well as recruiting players his job is also to shift out the manager’s unwanted first-team fodder and trim the squad to maximise funds to enable us to strengthen in the transfer market.
But Bolasie has hung on until the end and drained the club of millions.
We can’t blame him for that as he was given the contract and with his injuries and fading pace, who can blame him for sitting tight.
There was the sense that he thought he could force his way back into the side but unfortunately this team has way surpassed his abilities now and there is no return in sight.
It would have had to be some sensational Championship displays for Boro to consider handing a new Blues contract to Bolasie.
Rather obviously that has not sufficed, with zero goals in seven appearances, and he will head out of the back door this summer to little or no fanfare.
