Jacomuzzi would ‘definitely recommend’ Meret to Everton – report
Football scout Carlo Jacomuzzi claims he would ‘definitely recommend’ that Everton sign Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret this summer.
The Toffees were first linked with the Italian shot-stopper last month, with Il Napoli reporting that Carlo Ancelotti is keen on reuniting with Meret at Goodison Park.
Everton’s goalkeeping situation has never been clear under the Italian, with both Jordan Pickford and Robin Olsen having failed to cement a starting position, as indicated by Ancelotti’s proclivity to rotate his options in the Premier League.
Jacomuzzi, who previously worked as Everton’s Italy-based scout prior to Marcel Brands’ appointment as Director of Football in 2018, claims that his former club would be signing a young star with plenty of potential in Meret.
Talking to CalcioNapoli24 TV, as relayed by Napoli Magazine, Jacomuzzi was asked about Everton’s reported interest in Meret, and said: “I would definitely recommend him to the club.
“He is young and can still grow a lot. He needs to play continuously, which has not always happened.
“He can improve further, we need to give him confidence.”
Carlo Ancelotti spoke recently about wanting “two or three” new signings in the summer, indicating that he doesn’t plan on making wholesale changes to his playing squad.
However, if Robin Olsen truly doesn’t want to remain in England after the conclusion of the season, Ancelotti will need to find a new goalkeeper.
Joao Virginia, despite having performed admirably against Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-final, isn’t yet ready to take up the mantle as Everton’s back-up shot-stopper.
At just 24-years old, Meret has plenty of first-team experience under his belt, while he also possesses plenty of time to continue growing and improving.
Previously described as ‘the new [Gianluigi] Buffon‘ by prolific Udinese legend Antonio Di Natale, Meret has been earmarked as someone with a big future ahead of him, and Ancelotti has first-hand experience managing the goalkeeper.
Il Napoli believe Meret wishes to leave the San Paolo this summer, and that desire could see Everton sign yet another hidden gem should they decide to pursue him.
In other Everton news, the Blues could be willing to take a significant loss on £135k-per-week ace as summer exit looms.
