Everton tunnel footage explained as report details US-inspired performance booster powder
Everton are taking advantage of a transatlantic trend with the implementation of a performance booster that has been picked up on cameras recently.
Eagle-eyes fans might have spotted some curious pre-match events of late, such as this footage [Sky Sports via Football Daily Twitter] taken of Richarlison inhaling an unknown substance before a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace on Monday.
The Athletic’s Greg O’Keeffe investigated and reported on the ‘mysterious powder’ being consumed: “The Athletic has learned they are taking the latest performance booster to cross the Atlantic from US sport.
“The players are inhaling ammonia, more commonly known as smelling salts, from small single-use packets, which are around the same size as a ketchup sachet.
“Sniffing the contents provides the user with a dual effect: a sudden surge of alertness and cleared airways thanks to its strong decongestant properties.”
Small wins?
It’s a rather unusual thing on these shores but the Blues hierarchy are obviously looking to maximise performance and that means even the smallest details need to be addressed.
Similar to Richarlison, Mason Holgate was filmed inhaling the substance before our clash with Burnley on March 13, so it seems to be something sweeping the dressing room.
Whether it is just a fad that will run its natural course before dying out remains to be seen, but O’Keeffe has drilled down to the root of the subject that had inquiring Toffees on tenterhooks.
Judging by our recent results, it doesn’t look to have had much of an effect.
The word ‘alert’ is certainly not something that could be used to describe our performances in the past three league games as we have picked up just one point, and scored a mere two goals, in clashes with Crystal Palace (1-1), Burnley (1-2) and Chelsea (0-2).
