Celtic loanee Jonjoe Kenny remains coy over Everton future
Everton defender Jonjoe Kenny has remained coy on the prospect of joining Celtic on a permanent basis this summer following the expiry of his loan deal.
The 24-year old full-back moved to Parkhead in the winter transfer window on short-term deal, where he has gone on to play every minute of every Premiership game since becoming a Hoop.
With just one year left on his Everton contract and with no clear path to regular football at Goodison Park evident, speculation had suggested that Kenny could remain in Glasgow.
However the right-back, valued by Transfermarkt at around £6.3million, hasn’t been drawn into the speculation. Instead the defender has declared his intention to take one game at a time.
Speaking about his future ahead of Celtic’s game against Livingston on Saturday, as reported by Glasgow Live, Kenny said: “Nothing’s being said right now.
“There’s a lot of games to go and there are cups to play in. Me, personally, I just want to keep going day by day. I know that’s a boring answer.
“I just want to keep looking forward and perform to the best of my ability to help the team.
“It’s a massive club and a lot of people would want to be in my position, I’m lucky to be here. I have another year left. I’ve got time left, I’ve got next season.”
Solution likely to be found
Jonjoe Kenny’s response reads like that of a typical football – simply play down speculation and wait for the clubs to sort it out.
Kenny barely featured for Everton before sealing his switch to Celtic and going forward it doesn’t exactly seem likely that he’ll all of a sudden break into Carlo Ancelotti’s plans. If he couldn’t impress before he’s hardly done enough to leapfrog both Mason Holgate and Seamus Coleman.
Additionally The Athletic report that Everton are interested in signing a new long-term right-back this summer, which would indicate that they don’t consider Kenny a viable option for that position.
As such it suits all parties that Kenny moves to Celtic. Everton will find a buyer and won’t lose the player for nothing, Kenny can continue playing regularly and Celtic land a competent player with plenty of room to grow.
Kenny might not be open to discussing his future yet but we’d be surprised if we don’t hear more about this situation as the summer transfer window approaches.
