Kevin Campbell reacts to Gbamin return v Palace after lengthy injury lay-off
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell hopes to see Jean-Philippe Gbamin pick up more game time before the end of the season in order to hit the ground running next term.
The Ivory Coast international featured as a second half substitute against Crystal Palace on Monday evening, marking his first appearance in an Everton shirt in 597 days.
Campbell admitted that Gbamin’s lack of impact against the Eagles came down to him being out of practice, having spent so long on the sidelines.
Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell said: “It was great to see him back great to see him come on the pitch.
“He’s rusty, he’s carrying a lot of rust, but the fact of the matter is that he got on the pitch.
“It must be such a relief for the young man, and with a bit of luck hopefully he can get a bit of game time before the end of the season and have a good go at it next season.”
In good time
Gbamin didn’t look particularly sharp against Crystal Palace, but perhaps that is to be expected given the amount of time he spent out injured.
He could however be thrust into the starting line-up against Brighton on Monday, with both Allan and Andre Gomes potentially unavailable.
Gbamin will begin to settle and improve as he picks up minutes, but with Everton still in the hunt for Europe it will be down to Carlo Ancelotti to use him in the right way.
Hopefully, over the next few weeks he can establish himself a platform to succeed going forward into next season.
