Kevin Campbell reacts to inconsistent Everton form following Palace draw

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell is baffled by how inconsistent Everton have shown themselves to be this season after drawing 1-1 with Crystal Palace.

Last December Everton beat Chelsea, Leicester and Arsenal in succession in the Premier League, while they finally overcome bitter rivals Liverpool in February, demonstrating the club’s ability to compete with the league’s best.

However their current run of form sees them winless in three in the league, having picked up just one point from recent clashes against Burnley and Palace.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell said: “Everton’s form is consistently inconsistent.

“The problem with a lot of teams in the Premier League is that you just don’t know what you’re going to get, game to game.

“When you expect them to turn up they don’t, when you don’t expect them to turn up they do. I know it’s driving Mikel Arteta mad and it must be driving Ancelotti mad too.

“With Everton you just can’t put your finger on why they’re so inconsistent.”

Must work to improve

Everton’s tendency to ‘do an Everton’ and seemingly break down at the most inopportune of moments has been the cause of much frustration for some time now, and it is a problem that can only be rectified through time.

As Ancelotti continues to build and strengthen and improve, the Toffees will become more reliable and more consistent, but we’re still in the process of seeing the Italian create a squad that should hopefully promise to iron out those inconsistencies.

It is frustrating because Everton had the opportunity to close the gap on the top four with a win against Crystal Palace after Chelsea slipped up against West Brom, but now we’re back to square one again.

Everton have shown time and time again that they can take on the best teams in the Premier League and come away victorious, but without consistency they’ll never be able to breach the top four.

That has to be what Ancelotti continues to work on, and it has to be where the Blues work hardest to improve.
