Jean-Philippe Gbamin picks up injury that may rule him out for the season

Everton midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin has suffered a new injury that might rule him out for the rest of the season, according to The Athletic’s Greg O’Keeffe.

The journalist reports that it is early to assess the seriousness of his “freak” injury but it is not thought to be related to his previous issues. [The Athletic].

The midfielder returned from a 19-month absence only last week, making a 12-minute cameo appearance against Crystal Palace.

O’Keeffe said, “Shocking but sadly true – Jean-Philippe Gbamin has been injured again.

“It’s early doors with assessment but he may not play again this season.”

Big blow

Gbamin’s injury nightmare continues and unfortunately, this could be the final straw for the Ivorian.

It appeared that his injury problems were behind him once and for all but this setback means he is running out of time to prove himself at Goodison, and fans are likely running out of patience.

If he fails to return before the end of the season he could drop down the pecking order.

A midfielder could be signed in the summer and that will leave Gbamin as the fifth or sixth choice option for Ancelotti.

It is a massive shame as no player deserves to endure such a big lay-off, but as a club chasing Europe we have to be ruthless.

The remaining nine league games could have given Gbamin a chance to stake a permanent place in the team but now Ancelotti will continue with Allan, Tom Davies and Andre Gomes – not to mention Gylfi Sigurdsson.

We can only hope the injury is not as bad as early signs suggest, otherwise we may have seen the last of Gbamin.
