Jamie Carragher jokes around with Seamus Coleman after Everton draw v Brighton

Jamie Carragher poked fun at Seamus Coleman when he gave his post-match interview to Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football after Everton drew with Brighton.

Coleman expressed his satisfaction with the away point and refused to blame injuries when asked if Everton had been disrupted through certain absences – such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Carragher then took exception to the manner of one of his answers in a light-hearted, tongue in cheek jibe.

Everton

Coleman told Sky Sports [via BBC], “We wanted to win the game but Brighton are a very good side. This is probably a good point away from home.

“We don’t want to harp on about injuries – there’s plenty of other teams doing that. It’s part and parcel of this season.

“Injuries do happen and unfortunately we missed a few. It’s about the players who are playing.”

Carragher noticed Coleman’s vague criticism of other teams, and said, “You weren’t talking about Liverpool were you Seamus?”

Laughing in response, Coleman replied, “No no, Jamie”.

Taking responsibility

Carragher is ever the trouble maker and in fairness to the pundit Coleman may have been alluding to our neighbours.

It was an honest interview and though he did not directly refer to Liverpool, they can be included in the list of teams that have bemoaned injuries.

Everton

Everton have suffered their fair share of setbacks too.

Key players like James Rodriguez, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure have missed sections of the season.

Calvert-Lewin was the latest sidelined and we really missed him against Brighton – we had just one shot on target without him.

Despite that, Coleman takes responsibility for the failure to win on Monday and against Crystal Palace.

He knows the team have not been good enough at times, especially in home defeats in 2021, but he seems determined to put things right.

The top four is slipping away but Coleman is confident of qualifying for the next prize – the Europa League – and it is reassuring to see such a strong focus heading into the business part of the season.
