Kevin Campbell calls Gbamin’s injury situation an ‘absolute nightmare’
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell has labelled Jean-Philippe Gbamin’s injury situation an ‘absolute nightmare’ after the Everton midfielder suffered yet another setback.
The Ivorian midfielder has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering a knee injury in training, not even weeks after returning to action against Crystal Palace.
Before that Gbamin had been out of action for 597 days, having totalled just two appearances for the Blues prior to the Palace game, despite signing in 2019.
When asked about Gbamin’s latest injury setback, speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell said: “It’s been an absolute nightmare.
“I just feel so, so sad for the young man because whatever he does, he gets himself back fit and then he just keeps breaking down.
“Sometimes you just can’t put your finger on it, because I’m sure he’s doing all the right things but he just keeps breaking down.
“It must be soul-destroying for him.”
Gbamin’s proclivity for injury does raise some difficult questions for Everton to answer as they continue to build their squad to Carlo Ancelotti’s specifications.
The Toffees have predictably stood by the 25-year old, not just for their own benefit but also for his own mental wellbeing.
However, the pressure will now be on for Gbamin to fight his way back to fitness once again and then to maintain it, because if he somehow suffers another setback Everton will to reconsider their position.
Neither party wants that to happen but there is only so much that Everton can do. Hopefully, Gbamin is able to recover well this time and rid himself of these persistent injury issues.
