We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell doesn’t believe Everton deserved to beat Brighton when they faced off at the Amex on Monday.
The Blues limped to a goalless stalemate against the Seagulls with the home side having the better of the chances to win the game on the south coast.
Everton’s squad had been riddled with injuries prior to facing Graham Potter’s side, and the late withdrawals of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Josh King and Jean-Philippe Gbamin further complicated matters.
When asked about whether Everton had become too reliant on Calvert-Lewin this season, speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell said: “I wouldn’t say too reliant on him.
“They can be reliant on him, but when he wasn’t there Richarlison stepped up. We saw that, so there are goals in the team.
“If I’m honest though, they’re just not playing well enough. Defensively they’re doing great, but offensively they’re just not doing enough, they’re not creating enough.
“Everton were pretty poor and beating Brighton would’ve been a steal. They didn’t deserve it, but at the end of the day they [Brighton] couldn’t score either, so it was a fair stalemate to be honest.”
Everton’s injuries certainly made the clash at the Amex all the more difficult, with Carlo Ancelotti forced to field square pegs in round holes.
The Toffees’ lack of squad depth has seen them extremely fallible in recent weeks and it is something that will be cause for concern as the race for European football heats up.
Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison have both shown this season that they know how to score big goals when it counts, and the Blues will rely on their ability to do so in the coming weeks.
