Jamie Carragher and Jamie Redknapp disagree over Everton penalty decision v Spurs

Everton scored their first goal against Tottenham through a Gylfi Sigurdsson penalty but Jamie Carragher does not think there was enough contact for a foul to be given.

His Sky Sports colleague Jamie Redknapp disagreed with the commentator in his half-time analysis, arguing that Sergio Reguilon did make contact.

Redknapp also made a note of the left-back’s reaction to giving away the penalty – suggesting his behaviour implied guilt.

Commentating on the match for Sky Sports, Carragher said, “I think Everton might be a little bit fortunate with the penalty.

“When you slow it down, was there much contact? I just don’t see anything there.

“I can’t have a go at Michael Oliver, I’m sure most people would have felt that it was a penalty in real-time. But questions about VAR and the official who is on VAR.”

Redknapp opposed what Carragher said in-game, saying, “There is definitely contact.

“But what is most conclusive for me is Reguilon’s reaction. He gets up, he is dejected and walks away not complaining. He knew there was contact. It is a slight touch, but it’s a penalty for me.”

The right call.

Michael Oliver’s decision to give a penalty was an important one – without it, Everton could have found themselves trailing 1-0 at the break.

Redknapp is correct in his assessment of what occurred as Reguilon clearly collided with James Rodriguez and caused him to fall in the box.

VAR would have intervened if that was not the case, and those officials are best placed to judge.

Carragher talks about the slow-motion replays not showing much contact but the slightest touch can cause a player to fall when running at speed.

It is not fair to judge it on a frame-by-frame replay, therefore.
