Everton are in talks with Seamus Coleman about a future coaching role

Everton are in talks with Seamus Coleman about a future coaching role according to Marcel Brands, who recently spoke at an Everton USA Live event.

Coleman’s current £70,000 a week deal [Spotrac] expires in 2022 and Brands is eager to keep him at the club – the director of football is a big admirer of his character and professionalism.

Leighton Baines is a professional development coach with the academy and Brands wants Coleman to follow in his footsteps, so he too could help with the kids when he finishes playing.

Brands said, “I really like to use former players, especially for example the likes of Leighton [Baines] and Seamus [Coleman].

“They have so much experience, they love the club, they know the club, they know what’s necessary at Goodison.

“He’s (Coleman) not only a fantastic player but a great character in the dressing room, a great professional.

“I’m now already in talks with him to get him involved in, let’s say, things off the pitch.”

Planning for the future

Getting Baines onto the coaching staff was a brilliant development and we hope Coleman will follow in his former teammates’ footsteps.

He is a great role model for the current squad and according to Carlo Ancelotti he is one of the best leaders he has worked with, comparing him to Paolo Maldini, Sergio Ramos and John Terry [EvertonTV].

And if a serial winner like Ancelotti holds him in such high regard, just imagine what learning from Coleman will be like for youngsters coming through the academy.

As Brands alludes to, Coleman knows everything about Everton and what it takes to succeed at Goodison Park.

He arrived with a lot of pressure on his shoulders as an unknown quantity and has had a stellar 12-year career with us.

The same task faces each of our academy prospects and being taught by Coleman will stand them in good stead for the future.
