Everton defender Digne makes thoughts on Super League clear

Everton defender Lucas Digne has joined a still small number of Premier League players to speak out against the newly proposed European Super League.

Since the Champions League replacement competition was officially announced on Sunday night, fan reaction has been overwhelmingly negative while pundits, football officials and former players have also expressed their disdain.

However very few current Premier League players have made their thoughts clear just yet, although more and more are emerging as the hours pass.

Daniel Podence got the ball rolling with an impassioned Instagram post on Monday, while Bruno Fernandes, Richarlison and Patrick van Aanholt followed him by showing their support.

James Milner explicitly explained after Liverpool’s game with Leeds on Monday night that he did not want the Super League to go ahead, while Marcus Rashford took a subtle approach by sharing an image declaring ‘football is nothing without fans‘ to Twitter.

Now Lucas Digne has joined the party, also sharing the ‘football is nothing without fans’ message on Twitter.

Admirable move

Whether or not the football world can actually do anything to stop the European Super League remains uncertain, but the more players that decide to speak out and make their voice heard, the more hope he ultimately have.

‘Football is nothing without fans’ is a strong slogan for players to rally behind because it speaks truth about the nature of British football, why it works and why it has remained such a key part of so many peoples’ lives for over 100 years.

By sharing that minor sentiment Digne isn’t exactly speaking out in a way that many would hope, but it’s a start, and at this stage it comes down to whether players are courageous enough to risk their respective careers by showing that they don’t agree.

Ultimately it could mean nothing, and the elite club owners go press ahead and form the Super League anyway. But it might just mean something, and because of that we implore others to join in and do the same as Everton’s superstar left-back.
