Everton owner Farhad Moshiri has condemned the ‘rebel’ six Premier League clubs who have agreed to join the European Super League.
Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham have all signed up to take part in the newly proposed Super League and have faced widespread criticism.
The so-called ‘Big Six’ would join Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona in the controversial competition.
Speaking to talkSPORT on Tuesday, Everton owner Moshiri gave his thoughts on the subject, claiming that the plans go against “the very idea of British football”.
Moshiri said: “Every facet of it is against the very idea of British football.
“Football belongs to the fans and to their communities. This just takes much of their romance of football away. It’s just a money game, it’s not football any more.
“I think the Premier League should deduct points from these clubs.
“When clubs get deducted points for minor things – poaching a manager, a player, exceeding Financial Fair Play, these six clubs are attacking the very heart of the Premier League and I think they should be disciplined. That’s what I’d do.”
Moshiri also defended the Champions League while declaring that the Premier League don’t back down in their plans to punish the six clubs. Moshiri continued: “The Champions League is an amazing competition – it is the Super League.
“The Premier League needs to discipline clubs. They need to treat powerful clubs as severely as the poorer clubs.
“Football is about competition. When you see West Brom beating Chelsea, this is football.
“A club like Leeds can go down and come back and beat Liverpool, this is football. To deny this competition devalues the game.”
Is right, Farhad!
Since Moshiri first invested in Everton in early 2016, the former Arsenal shareholder has shown an immense understanding of exactly what makes the club what it is to the fans.
Everton is about family, about community and about maintaining tradition, and though Moshiri has spent millions upon millions since taking the reigns from Bill Kenwright he has never forgotten those pillars that hold the club up.
The Premier League have explained that they will punish the ‘Big Six’ following the announcement of the European Super League, and Moshiri is right to ask them to follow through on their word. These clubs need to be shown that their actions cannot and will not be tolerated.
The European Super League is everything that Everton isn’t. It stands for everything that Everton don’t condone and don’t practice, and Moshiri’s criticisms of the controversial competition are exactly what we’d hope to hear from someone so invested in Everton Football Club.
