Kevin Campbell believes Everton could sell Sigurdsson this summer
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell believes that Everton could look to sell Gylfi Sigurdsson this summer, despite the midfielder’s recent upturn in form.
The Iceland international scored both of Everton’s goals in their 2-2 draw with Tottenham last week, while he demonstrated some useful yet inconsequential link up play against Arsenal on Friday.
The 31-year old has little over one year remaining on his current contract with the Toffees, while Carlo Ancelotti admitted last month that the club were seeking fresh terms with the former Tottenham man.
Speaking exclusively to Goodison News ahead of Everton’s 1-0 win against Arsenal, Campbell admitted that Sigurdsson could see his time at Goodison Park come to an end this summer.
Campbell said: “I thought he had a good game [against Spurs], obviously he scored a couple of goals, he looked decent. But again, the manager is trying to build something to push this team forward to challenge at the top.
“Sigurdsson is a player who on his day could produce but I don’t think he’s as consistent as he once was. If everyone’s fit he doesn’t even start.
“They might be looking to change him, because they could get good money for him somewhere, and they’d be able to bring somebody else in who Carlo Ancelotti sees as an upgrade.”
Sigurdsson has proven to be quite a divisive figure on Merseyside since he made the switch from Swansea in 2017.
Since scoring 13 Premier League goals in the 2018/19 season and finishing as Everton’s joint top league goalscorer, the Icelandic midfielder’s form for the club has been exceptionally inconsistent.
Should Everton qualify for Europe this season they may elect to hold onto Sigurdsson to boost their squad depth, though it remains to be seen how often Ancelotti plans to field him next season.
