View: Everton consider making move for Trippier this summer

Norwich defender Max Aarons has emerged in recent weeks as the player most likely to sign for Everton this summer, as the club pursue a new right-back.

Mail Online reported earlier this week that Aarons was keen on a move to the Blues, though Everton had yet to agree to meet Norwich’s transfer demands.

It is believed that Jonjoe Kenny will be sold when his Celtic loan spell expires at the end of the season, leaving Seamus Coleman short on competition and a natural successor.

Mail Online also reported that Everton are considering Kieran Trippier as they look at their options, with the England international having been offered to the Toffees by current club Atletico Madrid.

If Everton are to pursue a right-back this summer, they must avoid signing Trippier.

It was just under two years ago that Trippier lined up in a Champions League final for Tottenham, with Liverpool emerging victorious for their first title success in over a decade.

Then 28-years old, Trippier was one of the more impressive right-backs in the Premier League, and his form for Spurs had earned him a deserved England call-up a few years prior.

Trippier continues to impress even now, having played 23 times in La Liga this season with Atletico currently sat at the top of the table, above both Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Despite this though, Everton have to ignore Trippier’s form and performance levels and focus entirely on the future shape of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.

Marcel Brands had previously operated with the intention of only signing players young enough to have re-sell value, although Ancelotti’s demands last season saw him largely scrap that remit.

However now with an ageing squad on their hands, Everton must turn their focus to players who can benefit the club in the long-run, and Trippier doesn’t do that.

Trippier will turn 31-years old early into next season, and though he may cost significantly less than the “outstanding” Aarons, he won’t be able to contribute as much either financially or on the pitch as the Norwich star.

Everton must consider how they wish their squad to shape up over the coming seasons, and that should be with a young and talented full-back coming into his own on Merseyside, not an ageing star looking for one last chance in the Premier League.
