Everton emerge as frontrunners in race for Metz midfielder Sarr
Everton are now leading their Premier League rivals in the race for Metz starlet Pape Matar Sarr, according to Mail Online.
It was reported earlier this week by French outlet L’Equipe that Everton had joined the race for the 18-year old midfielder, who had also caught the eye of Newcastle and Chelsea.
Despite initially beginning the season on the fringes for Metz, Sarr has quickly become a prominent player for the Ligue 1 side, attracting interest both inside and outside of France.
Now Mail Online report that the Blues have been in discussions with Metz over a possible move, though they are acutely aware of the club’s desire to drive the player’s price tag up in the eventuality of a bidding war.
Described as possessing good technical ability, an eye for goal and high energy to play in a box-to-box role by Mail Online, Sarr is said to be available for £27million when the transfer window opens.
Though Everton aren’t prioritising signing a midfielder this summer, the club are remaining alert to promising talent becoming available, and Sarr fits that profile.
Picking up steam
Now with Mail Online backing up L’Equipe’s original story concerning Everton’s interest in Sarr, it seems as though there is more weight to the story than we initially thought.
£27million does appear to be quite steep for a position that Everton aren’t exactly set on bolstering this summer, with Mail Online’s report making clear the the club would sign him purely because he’s a burgeoning young talent, having previously been described as someone who could “go very far” in his career.
That said, Everton do need another midfielder. The Blues have often been left short of depth in that position this season, and with Fabian Delph possibly available this summer it could be wise to sign a younger and hungrier replacement.
The Toffees undeniably have plenty of work to do this summer, and as such we’re only going to see transfer stories ramp up over the coming months.
Hopefully Ancelotti and Marcel Brands can sift through all the names and find the right players who can amplify and expand the club’s horizons in the near future.
