Manchester United goalkeeper Romero wants Everton move

Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero wants to sign for Everton following the expiry of his contract this summer, according to Mail Online.

The Toffees were interested in signing the Argentina international on loan last summer as they sought a back-up to Jordan Pickford, but United wouldn’t let him leave on a short-term deal to someone they considered a rival.

Everton were offered the chance to buy the shot-stopper permanently, however they ultimately passed and loaned Roma goalkeeper Robin Olsen instead.

Romero was understood to be upset at having not been allowed to leave the club, having been relegated to fourth choice at Old Trafford behind David de Gea, Dean Henderson and Lee Grant.

The 34-year old has been frozen out since his wife spoke out against United’s treatment of him in October, and he now looks set to leave for nothing when his contract expires.

Mail Online claim that Romero would like to move to Merseyside, though Boca Juniors and River Plate both remain viable options too.

Brilliant to hear

Romero wanting to sign for Everton could be just what the club needs this summer as they look to strengthen and enhance their squad.

Both Jordan Pickford and Robin Olsen have done well this season, and Carlo Ancelotti has been on record stating that he wishes to sign Olsen permanently, but other reports have thrown his future into doubt.

Mail Online claimed last month that Olsen, motivated by the armed break-in he suffered recently, wasn’t overly keen on remaining in England beyond the end of his loan spell.

If that does turn out to be the case then Everton could have found an acceptable and willing replacement in Romero, who United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer once described as “brilliant“, and he won’t demand a transfer fee either.

The Blues have lots of work to do to their squad over the course of the next few months and ideally replacing a goalkeeper isn’t a job that they want to have.

Hopefully, if Olsen does decide to return to Italy, Everton have the sense to explore signing someone who is a more than good enough deputy in Romero.
