Kevin Campbell believes Delph can aid Everton in Europe pursuit

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell believes the return of Fabian Delph could aid Everton in their pursuit of Champions League football.

The England international midfielder made his return to action against Arsenal last week, having been out injured since early December.

After coming on as a second half substitute against the Gunners, Delph followed that appearance with more minutes against former club Aston Villa, though he couldn’t help the Blues overcome Dean Smith’s side.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell explained how Delph would provide the Toffees with another dimension, suggesting he could contribute to the club’s push for Champions League football.

Campbell said: “Delph coming back obviously gives them a lot more balance because he’s a lefty, and he comes on the pitch and we know what he can do.

“He gets about, he gets around people and he’s a bit of a ratter, and he’s got good energy.

“You need players, especially at this point in the season, you need your squad to be as strong as it can be. Everton have to go for the Champions League, I don’t think they’ll make it, but they have to go for it and Fabian Delph could play a part.”

Having previously been described by Pep Guardiola as a “real leader“, Delph has often failed to have the same personal success on Merseyside that he has achieved elsewhere throughout his career.

Though he may show some leadership qualities it is debatable whether his ability on the pitch is good enough to have any meaningful impact on Everton and the way they approach games.

With Andre Gomes, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Allan, Tom Davies all fit and able to play in the same position as Delph, the former Manchester City man shouldn’t receive game time, yet he still does.

It remains to be seen whether he could aid Everton going forward, but we have our doubts.

In other Everton news, Everton want to sign ‘world class’ record-breaker and they’re ready to pay a big signing-on fee.
