Greg O’Keeffe hints at Richarlison summer exit
Athletic journalist Greg O’Keeffe has hinted at a summer move for Richarlison, claiming that the Everton striker could push for an exit.
The Toffees, despite their good recruitment last summer, have failed in their quest to make a realistic push for the top four.
This season, with everyone dropping points around them, Everton had a clear run to narrow the gap between themselves and Chelsea in fourth place.
However, draws against Crystal Palace and Brighton and a defeat against Aston Villa at home have seen Ancelotti’s side virtually bow out of the race to secure Champions League football for next season.
Continental qualification is still at stake, but even if they secure that, O’Keeffe doesn’t expect a quiet summer in terms of outgoings at Goodison Park.
In his Athletic piece, he wrote, “Consider Richarlison. The Brazil international has not been at his best for some time but it’s generally accepted that he’s young, still improving and has the potential to be world class.
“Champions League clubs could be interested again and the player himself has admitted to having itchy feet.
“Richarlison could decide to push for an exit if clubs with European football come calling.”
Backups ready
If we’re not able to hold on to him, it wouldn’t be the end of the world. Yes, Ancelotti has raved about him and referred to him as ‘fantastic’ [Guardian], we have been linked with a plethora of players, most of whom would come cheaper than the money we get from Richarlison’s sale.
This could also free up funds to sign a quality centre-back and maybe match Kalidou Koulibaly’s lofty wages.
There’s still no definite intent from Richarlison’s end just yet, so that’s a relief, but we’re expecting there to be rumours floating in the market once the window opens.
The club could play hardball to try and convince him to stay on for at least another season, but there’s no point in keeping someone who doesn’t want to be here.
Instead, signing players who take pride in donning the Everton blue is something our scouting team should consider.
An interesting few months ahead.
