Keith Gillespie backs Everton target Adam Armstrong to leave this summer

BBC pundit Keith Gillespie has backed Blackburn Rovers forward Adam Armstrong to leave for the Premier League this summer, amid interest from a host of clubs including Everton.

Everton are looking to sign a striker this summer to serve as an understudy to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and have identified Armstrong as one of their options.

The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to the top flight in the last few seasons, but this summer, given the links with Premier League sides including West Ham and Newcastle as well, he could very well part ways with the Rovers.

That’s exactly what Gillespie thinks will happen, who has gone a step further to state that he’s ready to take his career to the next level.

In an interview with Football League World, he said, “Blackburn in the last couple of seasons haven’t really looked like they’re going to promoted, like they’re going to get in the play-offs, you know if a club comes in for him I’m sure that they won’t want to stand in his way.

“But now I’m sure he wants to make that next step, if there’s Premiership clubs interested in him he’ll want to make that move, and you can’t blame him.”

Welcome news

Armstrong is a striker with a high ceiling and is finally showing glimpses of how good a player he can be in the next few years.

This season, he’s taken his game to the next level. His tally of 25 goals from 39 games is more than he’s achieved in the last three seasons put together. [WhoScored]

He’s a hard-working and mobile centre forward who can be equally lethal playing off the left.

That means that should we sign him, he would be a backup to Calvert-Lewin on paper, but in case Richarlison leaves or is unavailable, Armstrong could easily come in place of him.

The 24-year-old is the captain of Blackburn, and manager Tony Mowbray is understood to be a huge admirer of him, labelling him ‘exceptional’ right after the game in which he missed a penalty. [Lancashire Telegraph]

Carlo Ancelotti and the Everton fans would certainly take a player of his talent on board, and he could be a vital signing as the Italian is taking steps to make this side a force to be reckoned with.
