Sky Sports journalist gushes over Ben Godfrey v West Ham
Ben Godfrey impressed for Everton once more against West Ham and Sky Sports journalist Ben Grounds applauded his defensive contribution.
The centre-back played a vital role for the Toffees by providing the assist for Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s opening goal.
But he was equally important in defence, particularly in countering the threat of West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell, according to Grounds.
Providing text commentary for Sky Sports, Grounds said, “Ancelotti has been tasking Godfrey with the responsibility of driving forward into midfield and this is the reason why.
“It’s a superbly-weighted pass and a clinical finish from Calvert-Lewin.
“Ben Godfrey has been very impressive so far. He is judging when to go forward and stay back, when to dive in and stand his ground.
“He’s been a brilliant piece of business by Everton and one of the key differences this term. He is nullifying the threat of Cresswell.”
Signing of the season
As each game passes Godfrey keeps on proving that he was an absolute bargain at £25million [BBC].
He has really hit the ground running and it is remarkable how calm and comfortable he looks, no matter the occasion or where he plays in defence.
Michail Antonio is a tricky customer at the best of times, particularly when playing alongside Jesse Lingard for a West Ham side desperate for a win.
But thanks in part to Godfrey they barely got a sniff, and in stopping Cresswell’s service the youngster contained all of West Ham’s major threats.
It was a performance fitting of a seasoned professional, not a young defender – Godfrey just seems to be getting better and better.
The confidence he showed to surge forward from defence to find Calvert-Lewin for the goal was also superb, and shows Godfrey boasts an array of talents.
We are excited at what he will offer in future, and hope Marcel Brands can find other players of his ilk in the summer.
