Garth Crooks selects Ben Godfrey in TOTW after Everton win v West Ham
Garth Crooks has praised Ben Godfrey after the defender’s performance against West Ham on Sunday, naming him in his Team of the Week for BBC Sport.
As well as playing yet another starring role in defence for the Blues, the 23-year old directly contributed to Everton’s goal, playing the smart through ball and assisting Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Godfrey has rarely put a foot wrong throughout the campaign for the Toffees, having impressed mightily since signing from Norwich last summer.
Writing for BBC Sport, pundit Crooks was full of praise for the England youth international, crediting the defender’s ability and leadership against the Hammers.
On Godfrey’s inclusion in his Team of the Week, Crooks wrote: “This was an impressive display by Everton at London Stadium and the feature of their game was their defending. Ben Godfrey in particular was impressive.
“The defender has made something of a name for himself due to his competitive nature but also has an eye for a pass as he showed, sending Dominic Calvert-Lewin on his way to an excellent finish. The ball was brilliant.
“This lad has grown into a proper Premier League defender. I also got the impression that Godfrey was not afraid to take charge of Everton’s defensive responsibilities when Yerry Mina went off through injury.”
Genuine talent
Ben Godfrey would be unfortunate not to win’s Everton’s Player of the Season award at the end of the campaign, and that is testament to just how impressively he has taken to life on Merseyside.
Signed from the Canaries in the summer, Godfrey was anticipated to play a bit-part role, with the club likely to focus on introducing him into the fray over time.
However an injury to Lucas Digne saw him thrown into action from the off, and ever since then he has routinely turned in impressive performance after impressive performance, and he remains consistent week after week.
Godfrey has shown that he has a bit of everything; speed, power, determination, commitment, ability on the ball and an aerial threat. He does everything Everton need him to do, and because of this he has proven to be the best signing of the summer for the Toffees.
His strong performance against West Ham was no surprise to us, and we’re certain he’ll receive many more plaudits for his displays at Goodison Park as he continues to get even better under Carlo Ancelotti.
