Andy Hinchcliffe blasts Andre Gomes after wasted chance in Everton v Aston Villa
Andy Hinchcliffe blasted Andre Gomes for a wasted effort in the second half as Everton drew 0-0 v Aston Villa on Thursday night.
Gomes, 27, came off the bench to replace Gylfi Sigurdsson in the second half after yet another poor showing by the Iceland midfielder.
However, Gomes was hardly any better, missing two huge chances to break the deadlock at Villa Park.
At one moment, he managed to wrongfoot two Aston Villa defenders before blazing a wild shot over the bar.
Shortly after, he had a golden opportunity to score but his tame shot was dealt with by the Villa defence.
“He just needs to show composure, he’s just come on,” said Hinchcliffe on Sky Sports Premier League during the second half.
“He’s done all the hard work, sat down two Villa defenders. He really just needs a fast pass into the corner but he goes for too much power, it’s as simple as that.
“He really smashes it, you lose all the control and it’s way over the crossbar. It’s another good opportunity for Everton, he wasted it.”
Later on, Gomes had another chance that was blocked by Amhed Elmohamady.
Hinchcliffe called that one a “poor strike”.
Should’ve kept Gylfi on
Sigurdsson was woeful against Villa but even he would have made more of those chances Gomes had – you would hope.
In fact, just about anyone could have done better than the Portuguese midfielder, who’s registered a paltry one goal in 79 appearances for the Toffees.
It’s no shock that he’s managed just the one goal either because those efforts he had after coming on were pathetic – to put it mildly.
What has happened to Everton in the second half of this season?
We’ve seen what could have been a serious bid to finish in the top four go to wreck and ruin while hopes of a Europa League spot are also starting to vanish.
There have been too many passengers in the team as of late and Gomes is, unfortunately, one of them.
He’s been in and out of the team all season, starting 17 Premier League fixtures this term and coming off the bench 10 times.
Gomes simply isn’t an impact player so what was that substitution all about?
