Marcus Bent claims Everton won’t sign Romero this summer
Marcus Bent claims to understand Everton are not interested in Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero this summer.
The Argentina international was a target for the Blues last summer [Times] as they looked for a goalkeeper to support and challenge Jordan Pickford, with Romero named as an option.
Ultimately though United wouldn’t accept the Toffees’ loan offer, only wishing to sell the 34-year old permanently, leading Everton to turn to Roma shot-stopper Robin Olsen.
Romero was said to be keen on a move to Everton amid the club’s interest last summer, and according to Mail Online last month, the Argentine is still hoping to make the switch to Goodison Park.
However Bent spoke to This Is Futbol and claimed to have insider information at the club, information that detailed the club’s lack of interest in signing Romero.
On the prospect of signing Romero, Bent said: “That’s not going to happen, again I’ve been told that’s not going to happen. I got shut down on that one.
“This is how it was said. ‘Why would we bring in Romero when we have England’s number one and a Premier League number one in our team?’
“You can make a mistake or two, but if you continue to make mistakes you will get punished. He’s made a couple of errors, but he’s still young.”
Not conclusive
While it always seemed obvious that Romero wasn’t likely to replace Jordan Pickford this summer, Bent’s source doesn’t really touch on the situation surrounding Everton’s back-up goalkeeper.
Carlo Ancelotti has expressed an interest in keeping Robin Olsen with the club beyond the end of his loan spell but currently we don’t know the stand of the player and whether he’d be willing to commit at Goodison Park.
Pickford may have solidified his position as the club’s first choice shot-stopper but that doesn’t mean that Romero couldn’t still be of interest as a back-up should Olsen decide his future lies elsewhere.
Perhaps Bent’s source is adamant that Romero won’t come because the club have heard assurances from Olsen’s camp over his desire to remain with the club, but we can’t be certain of that.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer once described Romero as a “brilliant” player and he wasn’t wrong. The former Sampdoria man has talent that would benefit Everton should they bring him to Goodison Park.
Despite the words of Bent’s source we still believe that a move could happen, Olsen’s future dependent, and we’ll have to wait to see what his future unfolds.
