Everton join hunt to sign Danny Ings from Southampton
Everton are interested in signing Southampton and England striker Danny Ings, according to the Sunday Mirror.
Via PressReader, the Sunday Mirror’s print edition [16 May] reports that Southampton are in the process of trying to get the 28-year-old tied down to a new contract.
Should Ings refuse to put pen to paper it is believed the Saints will look to sell him for a fee of £30million, as he has just a year left remaining on his current deal.
The striker’s situation has also promoted interest from Manchester City, Tottenham and West Ham, so Everton face a fight if they are to land him.
Exactly what we need
Ings is a prolific goalscorer and we lack that in the current Toffees squad, with the exception of Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Unlike the Everton no.9, however, Ings is capable of scoring goals from anywhere.
He has brilliant invention and a real eye for goal, more so than Calvert-Lewin, who often relies on his physicality and aggression, particularly for headed goals.
Ings’ goal against Liverpool this season, when he diverted a crossed freekick to loop over Alisson, was a thing of beauty, and we would love to watch him at Goodison.
His presence would reduce the burden on Calvert-Lewin to score goals while providing fierce competition for the England man, something we also lack currently.
£30million is a hefty sum, particularly for someone as injury prone as Ings, but we would regret not making a move if he left to score goals elsewhere.
We may need to take risks to qualify for Europe and the addition of Ings would surely help us take the next step up the league.
