Pickford launches attack on Everton squad following loss v Sheffield United
Jordan Pickford offered a scathing assessment of his Everton teammates following the club’s 1-0 loss to Sheffield United on Sunday evening.
The Toffees recorded a record ninth Premier League loss at Goodison Park this season against the Blades, with Carlo Ancelotti’s men simply not up to task.
Having already been relegated this season, United should have represented a comfortable result for the Blues but they couldn’t rise to the occasion.
Speaking after Everton’s result (as reported by journalist Paul Brown on Twitter), Pickford revealed in a single sentence that his teammates simply didn’t possess the right mentality heading into the game.
The England international said: “They beat us on attitude, even though they’ve been relegated.”
Pickford was one of the few shining lights for Everton in the clash against United, with the goalkeeper continuing his recent run of form with a number of smart stops, though he could do nothing about Daniel Jebbison’s goal.
Damning verdict
Pickford’s simple statement quite rightly doesn’t take any prisoners, and though it’s pleasing to hear someone come out and lambast the failings of others at the club, it’s also shocking to hear that some players still aren’t up to the challenge.
Everton supporters have grown accustomed to their side not being good enough to compete, so losing to a superior team has never been a problem, but the fans quite rightly have a major issue with players not committing enough.
Our performance stunk of a side that didn’t have the necessary drive to spearhead a European charge, and that simply isn’t acceptable.
Carlo Ancelotti has a lot of work to do in the summer, not just in bringing quality to Goodison Park but also in bringing the right characters.
For all of his faults, Seamus Coleman is a player who understands what Everton fans want, what they deserve and what they won’t accept, and we need more players with the same mentality.
Pickford was right to call his team out, and now Ancelotti has to find the right solution to solve the issue.
