Andy Hinchcliffe hails Everton defender Lucas Digne v Wolves
Andy Hinchcliffe was left lauding the talents of Lucas Digne after the Everton defender proved his class against Wolves on Wednesday night.
Digne has come in for some criticism by some supporters lately, a far cry from his status as a fan favourite on the blue half of Merseyside.
But he looked to be somewhere back to his best against Wolves at Goodison Park, delivering some inch-perfect crosses into the penalty area.
After one corner in the first half Hinchcliffe hailed the French international on Sky Sports.
“It’s a sensational ball in from Digne,” he said.
“It’s exactly what you should do from an inswinging corner. It’s flat, it’s pacey, it beats the first man and [John] Ruddy can’t deal with it.”
He added: “I talk a lot in commentary about inswinging corners and you can understand why I do that when you see the delivery we just saw there from Lucas Digne, absolutely brilliant.”
Back on top?
That corner is what Digne is all about, and what we’ve become accustomed to seeing since his 2018 arrival from Spanish giants Barcelona.
He can put the ball on a plate for our attackers and that is why we have rated him so highly since he came through the door.
Rival fans and pundits have sneered at our comments, but we still believe he is one of the best left-backs in the Premier League, and potentially in the whole of Europe.
Andrew Robertson might be making waves on the red side of the city but we have our own marauding full-back, and Digne can probably lay claim to being the more balanced of the two.
He’s taken some flak in recent weeks, as have many of his teammates during a dodgy run of results that has left our European bid floundering.
But on this evidence, he might well be back to his best.
