Aguero to undergo late fitness test before Man City face Everton
Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Sergio Aguero will undergo a late fitness test before it is decided whether he can face Everton on Sunday.
The Toffees are set to travel to face Manchester City in their final game of the season this weekend, where the already crowned champions continue to prepare for their upcoming Champions League final.
Everton need at least a point to keep their hopes of qualifying for Europe alive, while it appears more likely that they’ll need to win to have any real chance.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s game at the Etihad, Guardiola revealed that he would like to give Aguero his swansong, with the Argentine leaving the club at the end of the season, though he concedes that he’ll have to make a late decision.
As reported by the Liverpool Echo, Guardiola said: “Everyone is fit, Sergio trained yesterday and today a little bit. Joao cannot play because he was sent off for three games for this action. The rest is fit.
“Tomorrow we’ll decide. As much as he [Aguero] can play he will play. He’s been injured. He had a partial training session, and tomorrow we’ll decide.”
Positive for Everton, or is it?
Everton will face a significant challenge when they face City this weekend, regardless of who Guardiola opts to field against the Blues.
Aguero is a supremely talented player, in spite of the injury issues that he has faced this season, and given that the game this weekend will be his final for the club he is sure to want to impress in front of the returning City fans.
Should Aguero miss out however, City are hardly weakened. Guardiola beat Paris Saint-Germain in the club’s recent Champions League semi-final second-leg without any forwards on the pitch, having fielded Bernardo Silva and Kevin de Bruyne up front.
Guardiola has built a team at the Etihad with so much depth that it’s difficult to ever get excited about notable squad absences, though the strength of their squad does not mean they are unbeatable.
Brighton exposed the kinks in their armour last week and Everton will have to hope that they can also do just that this weekend.
In other Everton news, the Blues are in advanced talks over a mega-money sale of this player.
