Calvert-Lewin claims double win at Everton end of season awards evening
Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin has received two major honours at the club’s end of season awards evening, having been named Men’s Player of the Season and the Players’ Player of the Season.
The England international has enjoyed a career-best personal campaign for the Blues, having scored 21 goals in all competitions, 16 of which have come in the Premier League.
Calvert-Lewin’s blistering early season form also saw him earn his first senior international call-up, where he has since gone on to score four times in seven caps for the Three Lions.
Voted on by Everton supporters, Calvert-Lewin is the sixth successive first-time winner of Everton’s Player of the Season award, following Richarlison, Lucas Digne and Jordan Pickford as the previous three recipients.
Speaking at the awards ceremony on Friday evening, Calvert-Lewin credited the confidence shown in him by Carlo Ancelotti for his dramatic personal progression.
When asked for the cause of his improvement, Calvert-Lewin said: “I think obviously the belief from the boss when he first came in, to put his confidence in me, to keep playing well and keep performing, and not give me too much to think about other than scoring goals and being in the box.
“I also think timing has been key with the age that I am and the experiences that I’ve gathered over the past few seasons in preparing me for this season.”
Well deserved
From the moment that Carlo Ancelotti arrived at Goodison Park last season, Calvert-Lewin appeared to be a changed man, but he didn’t hit full stride until the current campaign.
Though Calvert-Lewin has enjoyed periods of goalscoring success and periods of brief stagnation, the player’s overall improvement has been exemplary this season, and Ancelotti can’t possibly be any prouder in just how well he has developed.
The 24-year old has worked hard on better rounding his game this season too, with the forward regularly demonstrating impressive pace and strength as well as strong aerial ability, and that makes him an even more valuable asset to Everton.
The Toffees are after a winger this summer and should they find someone who can provide more regular and more accurate service to Calvert-Lewin next season, he’s bound to score many more goals.
DCL deserves to play in a better team and if Ancelotti’s recruitment plan comes off we could see him add to his personal success haul once again next season.
