Everton and Newcastle push for ‘Big Six’ clubs to face points deduction
Everton are one of two Premier League clubs spearheading the campaign charge that’s seeking punishment for the ‘Big Six’ following the European Super League debacle.
Mail Online report that both the Toffees and Newcastle are calling for a points deduction for the six clubs; Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool.
The ESL was met with universal backlash after it was announced in April, and though all of the six Premier League clubs involved quickly pulled out some clubs believe that the league needs to seek retribution for their actions.
According to Mail Online, Everton and Newcastle are lobbying for a points deduction on the grounds that imposing fines would do little to hurt the billionaire club owners.
Other Premier Leagues aren’t pushing for the same result however, having accepted that imposing such a sanction would only lead to a lengthy and unnecessary legal battle.
Mail Online reveal that the Premier League Board are ‘considering their options’ ahead of a shareholders’ meeting next month, with the matter needing to be resolved before then.
Hopeful stance
Though it might appear to be a futile effort, it should still be considered a positive that Everton aren’t prepared to allow the ‘Big Six’ to get away with their betrayal without punishment.
By committing to join the European Super League, each of the ‘Big Six’ clubs attempted to attack the fundamental pillars of the English football system without any concern over what the negative repercussions for other clubs might be.
Of course, as it has been stressed many times before, the blame for this thoughtless decision and the resulting backlash should lie squarely at the feet of club owners, with players, managers and supporters all suffering as a result of their selfishness.
It doesn’t seem likely that Everton will be able to force the Premier League’s hand and make them impose a points deduction on the ‘Big Six’, but the club’s decision to fight for that should be admirable in and of itself.
