Gary Neville slams Everton error as Jesus doubles Man City lead

Gary Neville slammed Everton defender Michael Keane in the final game of the season clash against Manchester City on Sunday.

Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring for the Premier League champions early into the first-half and Gabriel Jesus scored the home side’s second soon after, capitalising on a defensive mistake from Michael Keane.

In possession of the ball, Keane surged forward into City occupied territory on the halfway line, cheaply giving away possession to City who broke forward and doubled their lead.

Speaking on commentary on Sky Sports Premier League during the game, Neville criticised Everton’s failure to get the basics right, claiming that the club routinely frustrate him.

Neville said: “There are very few teams that annoy me as much as Everton do.

“Look at the striker, look at Calvert-Lewin’s run that’s just gone in behind. Play the ball forward to your strikers.

“To do that [give away possession] against Manchester City, with Michael Keane with such experience, and there’s a trap with four or five around him.

“In the end [Ben] Godfrey’s got a choice to make, neither of them are good choices, he either goes and commits as he does or he waits where he is but Jesus is going to score come what may.”

So much improvement needed

It was always going to be a lot to ask for Everton to get a result against Manchester City today, but to get the basics wrong just paints the players in a very negative light.

City have so much talent that they were always likely to unlock Everton’s defence, but at the very least the Toffees should make them work for it.

City should be forced to come out of first gear, and for the majority of the season Everton’s defence has been fairly solid, but over the past few months there have become more and more evident kinks in the club’s armour that Carlo Ancelotti must rectify.

Missing out on Europe is a huge shame given how well the club were placed in the Premier League table not that long ago, though in the grand scheme of things it might see more change on Merseyside this summer.

Farhad Moshiri is ambitious and he won’t stand for mediocrity, so hopefully the silver lining of failure can see Everton improve upon their horizons.
