Tyler praises Richarlison’s work rate in Everton loss v Man City

Martin Tyler raves about Richarlison’s work ethic despite the Brazilian failing to get on the scoresheet for Everton in their heavy defeat against Manchester City.

The Toffees had a very slim chance of qualifying for Europe in their final Premier League game of the season if they could beat City at the Etihad, however they were embarrassed in a 5-0 defeat.

Neither Richarlison nor Dominic Calvert-Lewin could find a way through City’s defensive line, though Tyler still had positive words to say about the former Watford man.

Alex Iwobi attempted to thread a through-ball to Richarlison shortly after the hour mark however a slightly too heavy touch from the Brazilian took the ball into Ederson’s hands.

Speaking on commentary on Sky Sports Premier League on Sunday, Tyler acknowledged the 24-year old’s unrivalled work rate throughout the game, despite his inability to convert chances.

Tyler said: “Richarlison could be played through here and again that big moment goes, that chance to put an imprint on the game.

“No one works harder than Richarlison.”

Never stops

Richarlison’s work rate and commitment in always delivering energy has always been one his strongest assets, however unfortunately that doesn’t translate to goals or points on the board.

Over the course of the season, Richarlison has failed to impress, at least by his usual standards, and Everton have suffered as a result – not just through the goals that he usually scores but also through how little he creates.

Far too little this season have we seen Richarlison take on an opposing defender and come out victorious before laying off the ball to a teammate in a promising position. His creativity has dried up, and that has left the club struggling with no further depth in wide positions.

However Tyler is right to praise his work rate, because truly no Everton player works harder than Richarlison. For all of James Rodriguez’s talents, he never tracks back to help out his defence in the same way that Richarlison does.

He needs to work on his game considerably next season, but this most recent praise of his talent is fully warranted.
