Kevin Campbell claims Everton need to sign forward similar to Zaha

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell believes Everton will look to sign a player in a similar vein to Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha this summer.

The Toffees are expected to spend considerably in the transfer market as they look to continue progressing under Carlo Ancelotti, with the Italian having confirmed that a winger is on his shortlist.

The Blues previously held an interest in £130,000-a-week [Guardian] Palace talisman Zaha, however they were unable to meet the Eagles’ transfer demands in 2019.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell explained that the Blues need to rectify their lack of goal threat coming from wide positions.

Campbell said: “I still think Everton need a centre-half and they more goal threats. If [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin doesn’t score or Richarlison isn’t at it they don’t score goals.

“I still think they might be in for [Wilfried] Zaha or a player of that ilk, because they’ve got to be able to create something from width and Everton don’t really carry a threat out there.

“They rely too heavily on Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison. When they’re not doing it you need goals from somewhere else and they’re not doing it.”

Everton’s lack of depth in wide positions has been very telling this season, with Bernard, Alex Iwobi and, to a lesser extent Richarlison, having failed to impress this season.

James Rodriguez has often played on the right in an unnatural position and outperformed his teammates, which has understandably led to Ancelotti’s interest in strengthening that position.

Pace, power and the ability to both cross the ball and score goals must be a priority as Everton look to add genuine talent to their squad over the summer months.
