Kevin Campbell has backed King to leave Everton amid Norwich interest

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has backed Josh King to sign for Norwich following the expiry of his contract with Everton this summer.

The Norway international signed for the Blues on a short-term deal from Bournemouth in February but has struggled to make much of an impact during his time on Merseyside.

King made 11 Premier League appearances for Everton but all of them came from the bench, while the 29-year didn’t play any of the Toffees’ last four games.

Journalist Peter O’Rourke reported last week that Norwich were interested in signing King on a free transfer this season as aim to strengthen on their return to the top flight.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell believes that King could turn his back on Everton in search of regular football.

Campbell said: “He’s out of contract so he can take his pick, but he wants to play football. He wants to go somewhere where he can play football, and you can see the way Norwich play.

“Norwich tend to play pretty open football and they create a few chances so as a striker you start rubbing your hands.

“Norwich obviously need more firepower, they’ve yo-yoed in recent times, they’ve been up and been down and now they’ve come back up, and now is the time for them to strengthen.

“Josh King would be a good signing for them.”

Exit seems inevitable

Carlo Ancelotti revealed on Friday that he would sit down with Marcel Brands this week and discuss the future of a number of Everton players, Josh King included, so he could still be offered a new contract yet.

Admittedly though it does seem highly unlikely.

King has been given a tough deal this season because he has never been able to build up any significant amount of momentum on Merseyside, and there’s only so much you can do to impress in short cameos each week.

That said, Ancelotti clearly mustn’t be impressed with what he has offered on the training field at Finch Farm, because otherwise he would have given him a chance to play.

Ancelotti spoke shortly after signing King about the player’s versatility, specifically asserting that he could start alongside Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin in a front three, yet we never saw that.

Everton need greater squad depth next season so it could make sense to keep the Norwegian but given how Ancelotti has treated the forward we just don’t see it happning.
