Marcus Bent expects Mason Holgate sale this summer
Former Everton striker Marcus Bent has claimed that the Toffees will be looking to sell defender Mason Holgate in the summer.
The Englishman has been a regular in Carlo Ancelotti’s team this season. The Italian has even spoken about his nature of being a ‘fighter’ that’s led to him becoming a more ‘complete’ defender. [Everton official website]
Holgate signed an Everton extension in March that would keep him at the club until 2025, as Ancelotti wanted him to fulfil his true potential at Goodison Park.
However, the club now seem to have made a complete 180 on their stance of the player and are now open to parting ways with him as early as this summer.
That’s according to Bent, who revealed this while speaking to Football FanCast. He said, “Well, he’s not really played too much. There’s been a lot of swapping in and out of the team, and he’s had a lot of defensive partners.
“Is that because the manager doesn’t fancy him? I spoke to someone and I think they’re going to listen to offers, and if the right offer comes then maybe they’ll push him off.”
Is there a plan in place?
With his versatility, Holgate’s proven to be like a Swiss army knife that comes in handy in different positions on the pitch.
He may not be the most technically gifted of our players, but he’s good a strong footballing brain that helps him read and understand the game better than most of our defensive players.
He’s just as suited to playing as a full-back as he is centre-back and never seems to have a problem with where the manager wants to play.
Holgate’s made 31 appearances in all competitions this season as Ancelotti has never appeared to be settled with his defensive pairing.
If he is open to the player’s sale, one can only hope that he’s got a more than capable replacement ready.
Because if he doesn’t, losing a player like Holgate could instantly weaken our bench which is already not the strongest.
If we are to finish top six next season, these are the kind of decisions we have to get right.
