Olsen could return to Everton as Roma seek exit for goalkeeper

Everton have received a boost in their pursuit of Robin Olsen with Roma seemingly keen on allowing the goalkeeper to leave the club this summer.

The Sweden international joined the Blues on a season-long loan last summer as Carlo Ancelotti looked for someone to support and challenge Jordan Pickford.

Olsen has been awarded game time this season, featuring 11 times in all competitions and seven times in the Premier League, though Pickford remains Ancelotti’s first-choice.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Jose Mourinho has plenty on the agenda once he begins work as Roma’s new manager in the summer, with incomings and outgoings to sort out.

Though Mourinho is likely to make up his own mind, Gazzetta claim that loan players Steven Nzonzi and Olsen will need the club to ‘find accommodation’ for them, implying that they will be sold.

Fellow loan players Justin Kluivert and Cengiz Under are expected to remain, but with Olsen seemingly on the way out Everton could look to secure another deal, with Ancelotti adamant on bringing the Swede back to Goodison Park.

Get it done

Ancelotti has been on record repeatedly to stress that Jordan Pickford is his first choice goalkeeper and that he has no intention of replacing him for Everton, so it stands to reason that he’d want to keep Olsen as a back-up.

Olsen however might not be content knowing that he is firmly considered to be a rotation option, and after facing personal troubles this season he might not be so keen on returning to Merseyside.

Everton meanwhile are certainly keen on keeping the shot-stopper at Goodison Park, with Ancelotti stressing that ‘fantastic guy‘ Olsen would be welcomed back to the club should he wish to sign a permanent deal.

From the club’s perspective it would perhaps be easier to sign Olsen, not just because the Swede has grown accustomed to the club and has proven himself to be a capable deputy in his own right, but because it would mean they don’t have to work on finding a new goalkeeper this summer.

Ancelotti and Marcel Brands don’t need the extra work in the transfer market, not when the back-up they’ve had has proven himself to be so capable, so hopefully either a permanent or a second loan deal for Olsen is locked up quickly.
