Alan Myers expects Everton ace Ben Godfrey to be in England Euros provisional squad

England manager Gareth Southgate will be announcing a provisional 33-man squad for the European Championships on Tuesday.

Everton defender Ben Godfrey could make England’s Euros squad following a fine debut campaign at Goodison Park, according to The Athletic.

Southgate has run the rule over the 23-year-old on a number of occasions this season and appears to have been impressed with his performances.

Godfrey is primarily a centre-back, but manager Carlo Ancelotti sometimes deployed him at left-back and right-back during the campaign, and his versatility could come in handy for the Three Lions at the Euros.

Sky Sports reporter Alan Myers expects the former Norwich City star to make the provisional list this afternoon, taking to Twitter to say: “I’ll be amazed if Ben Godfrey is not in the England provisional squad announcement.”

Versatile defender

Ancelotti and Everton fans likely share Myers’ sentiment given how impressive the utility man was this term.

Southgate often deploys a three-man defence, and having a player capable of providing quality cover and competition for all the positions at the back in his squad makes a lot of sense.

Godfrey deserves to be in the final 26-man squad and he fits the profile of full-backs the England boss reportedly wants.

Southgate is said to be keen on full-backs that show strong defensive qualities alongside their attacking instincts [The Athletic], and Godfrey has proven his credentials as one in the Everton colours.

With injured Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire not guaranteed to attain full fitness ahead of the opening game against Croatia on June 13, Godfrey could be the perfect option to play alongside John Stones should Southgate opt for a two-man centre-back system.

The England youth international was one of Everton’s best players despite an underwhelming campaign for the Toffees, and he deserves to be rewarded with a place in the Three Lions’ Euros squad.
