Kirkland backs Pickford to start for England at Euro 2020

Former England international Chris Kirkland has backed Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to start for the Three Lions at Euro 2020 this summer.

Pickford was one of four goalkeepers named in Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad earlier this week, alongside Dean Henderson, Sam Johnstone and Aaron Ramsdale.

The Toffees shot-stopper appears to be the frontrunner to start for England at the international tournament, having operated as Southgate’s first-choice for some time.

Everton

Despite Pickford having ended the season in fine form for Everton, his previous inconsistencies in the Premier League have caused some to have concern over his viability as England’s No.1.

However Kirkland has backed Pickford to perform on the international stage, telling talkSPORT that he can’t remember a time where he failed to shine for England.

Kirkland said: “I’m a goalkeeper and I may be biased, but I can’t remember when Jordan Pickford has let England down – and I’m not sure if you can.

“He’s performed well for England, obviously there’s pressure on him but he’s managed to keep it going and perform well. There would have been more pressure if Nick Pope had been fit.

“Obviously Pope played the last few games when Jordan was injured, but Jordan has experience.

“He’s never let England down for me. Yes, his Everton form is poor at times but I think he finished the season strong with Everton. He’s had a bit of a blip and the injury was hampering him during the season.

“He’s never let England down and did well at the last World Cup so I expect him to start for England come the first game.”

Fully deserved

Pickford has undoubtedly earned the chance to represent England at the Euros this summer through his late season performances for Everton, though the lack of competition helps.

Dean Henderson is a great goalkeeper but he’s struggled for consistent game time at Old Trafford this season, which is understandable since he has to compete with David de Gea.

Sam Johnstone has also performed admirably this season but his inclusion comes only because Nick Pope is unavailable, while Aaron Ramsdale is likely to be cut from Southgate’s squad.

Kirkland is quite right to point out that Pickford has rarely put a foot wrong for England, despite domestic struggles.

England finally won a game on penalties at the 2018 World Cup because of Pickford and something like that shouldn’t be fast forgotten because of club inconsistency.

Pickford deserves to start and thankfully Southgate is expected to keep faith in the former Sunderland star.
