Kevin Campbell backs Everton to move for Barcelona playmaker Coutinho

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has backed Everton to make a ‘smart move’ in the transfer window and sign Barcelona playmaker Philippe Coutinho.

Marca reported in April that the Toffees were looking to take advantage of Barcelona’s financial situation in order to bring Coutinho back to the Premier League.

The 28-year old left Liverpool to move to Catalonia in 2018, and speculation has suggested that the Brazil international wants to return to the English top flight.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell was supportive of a possible move for the attacker from Everton, with the Blues in need of offensive reinforcements this summer.

When asked whether Coutinho would be a good option, Campbell said: “He’s definitely one isn’t he?

“One thing he can do is create and score from midfield, and that’s key, not only to help your strikers but also to take pressure off your strikers.

“You’ve got a midfielder who can hit the back of the net on a regular basis and all of a sudden the opposition midfield have to zero in on him and leave more room for your strikers.

“It would be a smart move.”

Described as “phenomenal” by compatriot Roberto Firmino, Coutinho would, at the very least, bring a wealth of experience to Everton’s squad, both in terms of domestic and Champions League success.

He would also bring creativity to a squad that has been largely bereft of footballing ingenuity over the past 12 months, making him someone who could be a valuable addition.

It remains to be seen whether Everton are indeed interested, and if they are, where exactly he would fit. However, he could certainly prove to be a strong option this summer.

In other Everton news, this left-footed Toffees ace is on the verge of a major decision as clubs line up to sign him.
