Everton should make shock move by appointing Rafa Benitez – Jamie Carragher
Jamie Carragher has insisted that Everton could make one of the most “shocking” appointments in Merseyside history to replace Carlo Ancelotti.
The former Liverpool man has backed the Toffees to appoint Rafa Benitez, despite his obvious links to Anfield in the past.
Ancelotti left Goodison Park on Tuesday evening to rejoin Real Madrid, six years after he first left the Bernabeu, replacing Zinedine Zidane.
Writing in his Telegraph column and also on his personal Twitter account, Carragher shared his verdict on the managerial race.
“Rafa available and I am sure ready if Everton are prepared to consider one of the more shocking appointments in Merseyside football history,” he wrote.
“Benitez should be at the top of Everton’s list to replace Ancelotti, a better manager than any of the other candidates. But would Rafa managing Liverpool be too much of a turn off for the Everton supporters?”
Shock?
Benitez hasn’t been linked with Liverpool for many years and has been in China and at Newcastle since his success there.
The Athletic has reported that the Spaniard is one that interest Everton, although it is deemed unlikely alongside the likes of David Moyes.
It will be interesting to see which road we go down.
No one will have been expecting this move to happen as quickly as it did, but with a decent chunk of compensation behind us, hopefully, the next boss can be a massive name too.
Ancelotti failed to thrill at Goodison Park, and we need someone who can push us into the European qualification spots.
It is unknown whether or not Benitez can be the man after his years of little success, but it would certainly be a big-name appointment, the most shocking? Possibly not.
