Duncan Castles: Rafa Benitez being pushed very aggressively towards Everton
Rafa Benitez is being “aggressively” pushed towards a move to Everton, according to Sunday Times journalist Duncan Castles.
Benitez, 61, has been out of a job since leaving Chinese club Dalian Professional at the start of the year and is reportedly keen on the vacancy at Goodison Park.
“I understand Rafael Benitez is being pushed very aggressively by a Spanish agent to Everton. There’s a degree of interest there,” said Castles in the latest episode of The Transfer Window podcast.
Time to forget the past
Benitez would be a great shout to be the new manager but it says a lot that an agent is pushing him towards Everton, rather than the other way around.
While the ex-Liverpool manager may be interested in a return to Merseyside – albeit on the blue side of Stanley Park – the Toffees do not appear to be as keen.
It’s understandable that Benitez would want the job.
He’s situated in Merseyside, he clearly loves the city of Liverpool and he’s bound to be desperate to get himself back into work after leaving the Chinese Super League in the winter.
Benitez must feel as though he has unfinished business in English football too with his Newcastle spell cut short amid disagreements with owner Mike Ashley.
He was adored on Tyneside with the Magpies, as he was with Liverpool and Valencia.
Of course, Benitez has had bad spells in charge of certain clubs like Real Madrid and Inter Milan but ultimately, no other manager we’ve been linked with has a CV like the Spaniard.
It’s time to forget his Liverpool past and realise he’s possibly the best candidate for us.
