Barry Fry says some at Everton want Duncan Ferguson as manager
Peterborough United Director of Football Barry Fry has claimed that some figures at Everton want Duncan Ferguson as manager.
The former Toffees star has remained a favourite at Goodison Park since retiring, and is currently assistant manager.
Ferguson took charge of the team on an interim basis after Marco Silva was sacked in 2019, becoming Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant after the Italian took over.
Former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo is favourites to succeed the Italian [Telegraph], but Fry says some would love to see Ferguson in the dugout instead.
“The people I speak to up there are really keen on Duncan taking over,” the Peterborough DoF told Football FanCast.
“They feel that he does a lot on the training ground. He’s got the respect of every single player there and every single staff member.
“That would be a brave, brave move on the owner’s part to put him in charge but sometimes it’s better the devil you know. He’s been there, he’s been everybody’s assistant, he’s slowly learning the game. Is it the right time to give him the reigns? It wouldn’t surprise me.”
A huge gamble
We love Ferguson and would love to see him remain at Everton, but we think it is too early for him to be trusted with the manager job.
His temporary reign yielded a win and three draws, but that is not a yardstick to measure his tactical capability.
Everton need someone with experiences at top sides in top leagues capable of leading us to Europe next season, and Santo is the perfect man for the job in our opinion.
Ferguson needs to have a shot at managing teams in the Championship, and he could be considered for the top role in the future.
Right now, we cannot afford to gamble with such a crucial appointment, and those calling for the 49-year-old to take over as manager are being emotional.
While he has been a key part of the coaching set-up since 2014 and is well-loved by everybody connected with Everton, he has not proven himself anywhere, and that is a key prerequisite for one of the biggest jobs in the Premier League.
We are huge fans of Ferguson, but we do not think he is the right man for the job at the moment.
In other Everton news, this is when Toffees will announce Nuno Espirito Santo, according to Fabrizio Romano.
