Everton chiefs want squad overhaul, Premier League rules could be an issue

Everton could be held back by the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules as they look to overhaul the squad this summer, according to Paul Joyce.

Writing on The Times website, Joyce reports that the Goodison Park hierarchy understands the squad needs an overhaul this summer.

However, the profit and sustainability rules cast doubt over whether the Blues are able to do that despite Farhad Moshiri and his backers being intent on bringing success to the club.

Huge summer ahead

Firstly, the Blues need to hire a new manager.

Carlo Ancelotti quit Goodison to return to Real Madrid three weeks ago and while Rafa Benitez is widely reported to be close to getting the Everton job, we’re still at a point where the appointment needs to be made sooner rather than later.

As per The Times, Everton players will return to pre-season training on July 5 and by then, Marcel Brands and whoever is the next manager should have an idea on who they want to sell and who they want to sign.

We have a lot of deadwood on the books at Goodison Park and a lot of it needs shifting on.

However, there are also players who, if sold, will need to be replaced and that is perhaps where the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules come into play.

Those rules limit “the permitted losses of a football club to £105million over a three year period” [The Esk], which will no doubt hold us back if we come close to stepping over that threshold.

People at Everton will have a far better idea than we do on where the margins are and what needs to happen to ensure those rules are not broken but either way, it’s not great when we have a super-rich owner who only wants to assemble the best squad possible.

In other Everton news, the Blues want to sign this “box-to-box” midfielder who’s impressed Thierry Henry.
