Kevin Campbell warns Nathan Broadhead to brace himself for Everton loan exit

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has warned Nathan Broadhead that he might have to leave Everton on loan this summer, despite signing a new contract last week.

Everton announced on their club website last week [18/06/21] that the 23-year-old has put pen to paper on a new two-year deal to keep him at Goodison Park until 2023.

Ex-Blues striker Campbell believes that while the Wales youth international is a “great talent”, Everton’s ambitious plans may put paid to any hopes he harbours of breaking into the first team next season.

Everton

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell said: “It’s either next season [that he breaks into the side] or he goes on loan and does it in the Championship or League One, I think that’s the key.

“He’s obviously got great talent but Everton are a club who are looking to really progress. When you think about it, with eight games to go, Everton could have qualified for the Champions League.

“But if the new manager comes in and fancies him then obviously he is going to get his opportunity.

“But if he doesn’t and he wants to go with more experience then the young man might have to go out on loan and do it there, but either way, he’s a talented young kid.”

Prove his worth

Broadhead is clearly an exciting prospect, underlined by The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland, who wrote on his personal Twitter profile that it was former Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti who recommended he was given a new contract, after he impressed the Italian in training.

But, at 23, Broadhead really is pushing the boundaries of the term ‘prospect’.

Many players his age have over 100 appearances to their name, but he has played just 24 games in his senior career, 22 of them for Burton Albion in League One.

That loan spell was two years ago now, and his Blues outing last term was his first since the 2017/18 season.

A loan is surely on the agenda, and he will need a stellar season to force his way into the Everton first team, regardless of who takes over.
