Troy Deeney urges Everton to copy Liverpool vision
Watford striker Troy Deeney believes Everton should follow the lead of their bitter rivals Liverpool and launch an overhaul of their current set-up.
Speaking on talkSPORT [22/06/21] Deeney, who is the Hornets’ record Premier league goalscorer, issued a scathing assessment of Everton’s current methodology in recruiting managers and players.
“I think from the outside looking in at Everton, I always think ‘what’s the process, what are they trying to do?’

“There are a lot of good players in the squad, but none of them actually fit a system.
“People aren’t going to like this but I think they need to do what Liverpool did, appoint a manager, get rid of the deadwood and go with the vision over three, four, five years.
“I just think these appointments now are ‘let’s just get big-names that might get instant success’, but there’s no longevity towards it, there’s no foundation to build off, and I think that’s what the Everton fans are getting frustrated about.”
Bitter pill to swallow
Of course, we don’t want to admit that Liverpool are the flag-bearers of Eglish football, and all others must follow their lead.
But there is a truth to the point Deeney is making.
Our bitter rivals spent years in the doldrums themselves, in comparison to the success they had previously enjoyed.
They were never in serious contention to win the Premier League, and even lost touch with Europe.
But they appointed a young, hungry manager in Brendan Rodgers who helped to initiate the start of a slight renaissance before things went awry.
The appointment of Jurgen Klopp as their manager changed events immeasurably, as did smarter recruitment of younger players who could grow with the team or be sold on for massive profit.
Why can’t we do something similar? We’ve been making far too many mistakes in the transfer market recently, signing players with little to no resale value, and one that are starting their decline.
There needs to be a new philosophy ingrained into the fabric of the club, one that will set us up for future success.
That certainly doesn’t include hiring an out-of-date manager like Rafa Benitez.
