Everton in ‘deep discussions’ to hire Rafa Benitez

Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is in “deep discussions” to become the new Everton boss, according to Liverpool Echo journalist Phil Kirkbride.

The Toffees were left in need of a new leader after Carlo Ancelotti unexpectedly returned to Real Madrid earlier this month.

Kirkbridge reports the grand unveiling is not thought to be imminent with other names still in the mix, but talks between Everton and the Spaniard are real and ongoing.

With non-international players set to return to training on July 5, the Goodison Park hot seat cannot remain empty for much longer.

Time is of the essence

As Tottenham Hotspur fans cringe at an even lengthier manager hunt, it is crucial that the Toffees make solid progress over the next week or two.

Nuno Espirito Santo and Graham Potter have also been linked with the job, as well as virtually every other Premier League vacancy in recent weeks.

If Everton do manage to haul the Benitez deal over the line, it would seal a shock return to Merseyside for a man who spent six years in charge of Liverpool.

Boasting winners’ medals for the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League from his time at Anfield, Benitez took his expertise to Inter Milan, Chelsea and Real Madrid among others before a recent stint in China.

The Madrid-born coach became known for his fiery antics when dealing with the Liverpool board and rival managers, prompting former Everton captain Don Hutchinson to claim the proposed move would “end in tears”.

Would he be welcomed with open arms? Perhaps not. However, significant signs of improvement could gradually win fans over, a feat the experienced coach is more than capable of.

In ther Everton News, Don Hutchinson is dismayed at Benitez reports and urges the Blues to appoint Graham Potter.
