The Athletic: Everton open talks for Sergio Romero

Everton have opened talks with goalkeeper Sergio Romero over a summer move, according to The Athletic.

The Argentina international’s contract at Manchester United is set to expire at the end of this month, leaving him free to join the club of his choosing.

Last summer, when Carlo Ancelotti was at the helm, Romero was targeted by Everton and the Toffees had even offered a £2million loan fee plus the coverage of all Romero’s £100,000 per week wages.

However, that was not enough for the Manchester outfit, and they decided to turn down the offer, relegating Romero to being the fourth-choice keeper at Old Trafford.

Good move

We’re still unsure whether or not Robin Olsen will be returning to Goodison Park, so it makes sense for us to find a backup in case that move doesn’t materialise.

Romero has been a solid goalkeeper even during his United days, and only this past season, when Dean Henderson was also at the club, was he starved for playing time.

He also fell out of favour with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer which is baffling as he was widely regarded as one of the, if not the best second-choice goalkeeper in Europe.

He’s also been Argentina’s goalkeeper during their run to the 2014 World Cup final, so there’s no denying his ability.

Goalkeepers tend to be in good shape even in their late 30s and we’re sure that should we sign Romero, he would be an impeccable backup option.

There’s no way he’ll replace Jordan Pickford, but having a good backup for the cup games and to deputise when the England international is injured, is always welcome.

Juventus and Celta Vigo are also touted as potential suitors so we’re gonna have to be quick in our pursuit of the Argentine.
