Duncan Ferguson could stay on at Everton after Rafa Benitez appointment – report

Rafa Benitez will hold talks with Duncan Ferguson over the coming days to make him part of the new-look backroom staff at Everton.

Ferguson was a part of Carlo Ancelotti’s coaching staff and is expected to be retained by the club under Benitez, per Liverpool Echo.

According to Sky Sports, Benitez is likely to be appointed the new Everton boss in the coming days.

Despite there being public dissent from fans, Farhad Moshiri and Marcel Brands will go ahead with the appointment.

However, Ferguson’s retention could help soften the blow in what seems to be a very polarising move taken by the Toffees hierarchy.

Good move

Big Dunc understands the club ethos, is loved by the fans, and will only do himself favours to one day become the manager if he decides to stay on as part of Benitez’s staff.

We know that he has ambitions of one day becoming a number one at a club, preferably Everton, and could be next in line to succeed Benitez once his days at the club are finished.

He’s had already had his chance to manage the club on an interim basis and retaining his association with us will put him in the good books of Moshiri, Brands and Bill Kenwright.

His energy is infectious and he could give Benitez a few pointers as to what is and isn’t acceptable by the fans and could prove to be the bridge that unites the two.

There’s undoubtedly going to be some hostility in the initial days, but having him communicate with Benitez could make the fans more sympathetic towards the new manager.

At the end of the day, the Spaniard knows that once he starts delivering the results, there will instantly be a turnaround in the mood of Evertonians and for now the most important thing for him to do is ensure that our star players are retained and we strengthen in positions that need reinforcements.
